Alvar                                                                              back to the top

There are some places that must be certainly visited and one location that isn't that important, but you can check it out anyway, it's for you to decide.

Scrolls for Might Hero
Do not forget to buy 'Wizard Eye' and 'Torch Light' scrolls in a shop.
Ravenshore                  back to the top

Wolves

They are not that strong and you can deal with them even at the beginning of the game.
The only thing to remember is not to let the whole pack to attack you at once. Do not let them come too close to you.
Inside the den itself be careful. Should you go there at the beginning of the game, better use magical wands. Buy several with offensive spells, they will help a lot.
Tips & Warnings
Below are the short advises of passing specific locations and creatures of Might and Magic VIII game.
Though they are for the solo playing with only one character,
most of them can be used in traditional passing of the game.
The tips are listed according to the geographical locations and more or less in chronological order of passing, though in no way the order is the obligatory one as every player is always moving through the game in his/her own way.
The author deliberately refrain from giving any spoilers, though in some confusing places there are detailed instructions highlighted by the red.
Anyway, I hope that some of these advises could help somebody to pass the difficult place and continue enjoy the game.
Good Luck!
Dagger Wound Island

It is the excellent place for gaining experience. The only thing you need is to swing your sword or whatever assault weapon you prefer until your hands will be numb from exhaustion. The exercise will be the courtesy of the Pirates.
So, how will you do this.

There are two teleporters near Clan Leader's Hall. One of them leads to the island and the ship that brought you here when you came from Ravenshore. It is the one you have fixed with the Cleric, remember?
The second leads to one of the disembarking places of the Pirates.
There is a fountain that restores Hit Points near the Hall and the teleporters.
What you need to do is to jump through the teleporter to the Pirates, kill as much as you can, jump back to restore your health and then back to the work of killing Pirates. Repeat the procedure  until the Pirates cease to come anymore.

Be prepared to the long hours of working as there are many Pirates and they are not very bright, so it will be the long process of discouraging them from visiting the Dagger Wound Island. You may even become bored by this but have patience and finish what you have started.
Of course, you may just drop it and forget the issue, but believe me you can gain a lot of experience with this easy killings, and this experience will be extremely needed for skills improving later.
Abandoned Temple

Be sure to pay a visit there. There are two objects essential for your two different quests in the temple. To open some of the doors you must run pretty fast along the walls and click on the snakes' eyes. Be careful inside, naturally.

The first object is the Idol (detailed instructions)

Is in the last room with the glowing floor. Step on one of the glowing floor tile. The left wall will reveal a niche with a chest inside. Inside the chest you'll find the Idol.

The second object is the Book

It is easier to find, so I refrain from any detailed instructions. The Book will be asked for in Murmurwoods.
The Uplifted Library

Check everyhting inside and be attentive. But only when you'll feel that your hero is strong.
Pirate Outpost

You can't see it at the beginning of the game. It will appear only after you create an alliance and receive a specific quest from this alliance. At that time your hero is supposedly quite strong  and there is a reason for this as the Pirates in the Outpost are not the same you have met and mercilessly killed before. Now you'll face the elite of the Pirates, the sturdy fighters with a lot of hand-to-hand experience and amount of hit points up to 80. So, be pepared for the fight.

Smugglers' Cover

This place must be visited, otherwise you'll not be able to fulfill the Alvar Merchant Guild quest connected with the ships.
You'll be able to find money and some useful things there.
What you must remember - do not go to Arion Hunter until you finish inspecting all rooms and collecting all things. You'll be met  by the Magi and rat people. Be careful, do not take any chances. Better go out for a while, restore your health and then return. You'll not be able to kill them all in one turn anyway. Run by the Magi and rat people. Be careful, do not take any chances.
If you are playing with the might hero, the best tactics is to come close to the Magi. That's way they wouldn't be able to inflict extra damage to you by their attacks and have to fight hand-to-hand.
Centaurs

They have several chests that you need for replenishing your purse with gold.
Be careful as they are very swift and good shooters with large range.
Try to kill them by one, maximum by two per turn.
The best way is to draw one - two centaur off and kill them far from the group. Use the terrain. There are hills around that provide some advantages. Be sure to have the mode 'always running' there.

Shopping for the Might Hero

Do not forget to check a shop in Ravenshore for the scrolls 'Wizard Eye' and 'Torch Light'. It is very important for your survival and 'Torch Light' is the most needed apell for you.
Alvar                                                                              back to the top

There are some places that must be certainly visited and one location that isn't that important, but you can check it out anyway, it's for you to decide.

Scrolls for Might Hero
Do not forget to buy 'Wizard Eye' and 'Torch Light' scrolls in a shop.
Ogre Fort

This is the place that must be visited because you need to free the daughter of Arion Hunter or he wouldn't provide any ships.  By the way you can fulfill the quest connected with the Ogres you have taken in Alvar.

Before you go inside the Ogre Fort do not forget to switch on the combat mode in front of the doors.
As soon as you enter there will be Ogre Leaders before you and to the right side. They are not the worst.
What you must check out is Ogre Magi. These must be killed first as they are the toughest and only after them pay attention to Ogre Leaders.

There are two passages inside the fort and both of them leads to two different halls.
Be careful  when you'll go to one of the halls as when you enter the passage leading to it enemy will surely appear at your back.

My advice: When you enter the passage, which leads you to the hall, do not go far, just enough to attract attention those who are in the hall. As soon as they spotted you, backtrack your steps to the exit from the fort drawing off those who are following you. Otherwise you risk to find yourself between two enemies in front of you and behind in the passage. Not the best fighting position. Ogres maybe not bright but they are not that stupid not to use this advantage for killing you.
Fort cellars
Be careful when you'll go down to the cellars as the way is extremely steep. If you drop down you can loose the half of your hit points and it is not very good idea to be half dead in the Ogre Fort.
Wasp Nest

This is the home of Wasps, sentinent bee people. Perhaps you have already seen them, if not then you'll see them  now. They are beautiful  but deadly warriors.
This is the location that could be skipped as  it doesn't influence your passing the game in any way. It's for you to decide will you go inside or not.
What can you find there:
~ extra experience for sure and a lot of it, actually
~ as it is the home of bees, though sentient, there is honey inside; and this delicacy is the favorite dainties for the Trolls and they are ready to pay as much as 1500 gold for every jar you can get out of the Wasp Nest.

Keeping in mind the above I advice you to visit the home of Wasps.
Before you go inside the Nest be sure to store the scrolls with 'Jump' spell that are lying in the chests in two tents standing in a crevice betwen the mountains.
The reason for this is that the Nest has many levels and you can travel between them only by jumping. Natural jump will not be a help. Moreover, you need these scrolls even if you're playing with the magic hero as casting of the spell 'jump' will not give you  a jump with a height sufficient for reaching next level of the Nest.

Tactics inside the Nest
When you enter and kill the guards in the first cell of the Nest, there will be not too much of them anyway, follow the procedure described below.
go to the end of the cell where there is a hole in ceiling to the next level. Show yourself near this hole that Wasps from the level above will notice you. Draw one-two Wasps from the above level to you and kill them. Repeat the procedure until nobody will go down to you  through the hole.  Usually it means that the way is clear. Go up by jumping and repeat the process.
When you'll reach the highest level you find that there are more levels going down. Here is the time to check the level of your hit points. If it is low and you don't have enough healimg potions to restore your life strength do not take chances with the Wasps.   You may not return alive. Better go back to Alvar, spend a night in the soft bed of the Tavern, restore your health and continue your  excursion to the Wasp Nest on the next day.

'Day of the Gods' Pedestal

Before you go inside either Ogre Fort or the Wasp Nest do not forget to visit this pedestal in Alvar. It is near the Temple. The location is fortunate as immediately after the pedestal you must go to the Temple to raise your hit points. Don't skip this when you are planning to fight.
